Department Publications

Our department is responsible for four academic publications, each highly respected in the field.
Taiwanese Journal of Political Science
Mainland China Studies Newsletter
Political Science Quarterly Book Review
Asian Ethnicity

Taiwanese Journal of Political Science
Political Science Review is a professional journal aimed at exploring issues related to Political Science. It was founded with the aim of inspiring Taiwanese research in Political Science in March, 1990. After a decade of efforts by students and faculty in our department, as well as other students in the same field, the academic prominence and influence of this journal has been widely recognized. It has been incorporated into the Taiwan Social Science Citation Index database since 2000.

Originally issued biannually, Taiwanese Journal of Political Science has been issued on a quarterly basis since June of 2004. The department expects it to become the most prominent and representative Political Science journal in the Chinese academic world. It emphasizes generality and comprehensiveness, and thus welcomes a variety of theories and analyses related to politics and political phenomena in all fields, such as Political Theory, International Relations, Public Administration, Cultural Studies, and other broader subfields of social science and/or social philosophy. Taiwanese Journal of Political Science welcomes submissions from all over the Chinese academic world, in Taiwan and overseas. Our department expects that it will become an arena in which academic professionals from different backgrounds and generations can inspire one another.

Mainland China Studies Newsletter
The Mainland China Studies Newsletter has been co-published by the Department of Political Science of National Taiwan University and Mainland Affairs Council of the Executive Yuan since 1994. The Research and Educational Center for China Studies and Cross-Taiwan Strait Relations, established by the department, is responsible for editing. Since initial publication, its readership has spread around the world, and its contributors have come to include those from the humanities and social sciences, in Taiwan and Mainland China, including senior academics, well-known writers, young academics, think tanks researchers, and policy-makers. The purpose of the Mainland China Studies Newsletter is to fill the existing gap between academic journals and general magazines, to provide a forum for academic issues that can not be easily published through regular channels, including reflections, teaching materials, references, articles, and book reviews related to Mainland China Studies, and reports on research projects, academic conferences, research institutions, academic theses, and important academic figures. The newsletter specifically emphasizes a variety of perspectives, and respects and encourages reflections on historic events and communication between cultural studies and the social sciences. In the 1980s, the social science perspective was introduced into the field of Mainland China Studies in Taiwan, and since then, the contours of this field have gradually blurred. The space created by the newsletter has encouraged communication among social science, history, and cultural studies; through this cross-pollination of academic fields, Mainland China Studies has been consolidated and promoted as a field of academic knowledge, which has been the greatest contribution of the Mainland China Studies Newsletter.

Political Science Quaterly Book Review
Starting in March of 2004, the department has initiated this academic quarterly book review edited by students, to increase the academic participation and enthusiasm of students in the related departments of Political Science in Taiwan. Book reviews and introductions of academic work in Political Science are actively sought. This quarterly will serve as a medium for teachers and students to publish book reviews and references, and provide an arena where authors and commentators can exchange their opinions. The Political Science Quarterly Book Review is expected to play a leading role in promoting an atmosphere of academic research in Political Science in Taiwan

Asian Ethnicity
In the twenty-first century ethnic issues have assumed importance in many parts of the world. Until recently, questions of Asian ethnicity and identity have been treated in a balkanized fashion. Asian Ethnicity provides a cross-disciplinary, international venue for the publication of well-researched articles about ethnic groups and ethnic relations in the half of the world where questions of ethnicity now loom largest. All research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, and the journal has been included in two citation indexes, Sociological Abstracts and International Political Science Abstracts. In content, it covers any time period, although the greatest focus is expected to be on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In broad terms the geographical region of concern for the journal is bounded by Lake Baikal to the north, Japan to the east, Java to the south and the Caspian Sea to the west. The most populous, and probably most significant, contemporary political states to be included are China, India and Indonesia.

From January 2008, the editorial responsibility will transfer to the Department of Political Science at National Taiwan University, with Professor Chih-Yu Shih serving as the editor-in-chief and Professor Chen-Dong Tso serving as managing editor. In addition, Professor Xiaowei Zang at the Department of Asian and International Studies, City University of Hong Kong, will serve as book review editor. Editorial Correspondence, including manuscript for submission, should therefore be sent to the following Email address: asianethnicity@ntu.edu.tw Books for review and other material related to the journal’s research agenda should be sent to: xiaowei.zang@cityu.edu.hk For any other questions, please contact editorial assistant: Ms. Wei-Ting Yen, Tel: 886-2-23519641 ~ 501; Email: asianethnicity@ntu.edu.tw.
